All wooden humidors need to be seasoned before use. The reason is two-fold:
(1) to raise the moisture level in the wood so it'll be in equilibrium with your cigars, otherwise the wood will rob moisture from your cigars if it's too dry, and
(2) the lid won't seal as well as it should.
If you live in a dry climate it's not unusual to need to re-season once a year, usually during the dry winter months. There are a lot of ways to improperly season a wooden humidor, most of which you'll see by trolling YouTube videos on the subject.
The #1 easiest way to way to destroy a fine humidor is to wipe it down with distilled water. That uneven and instant shock to the wood will usually lead to warping, a bad seal, and lay the groundwork for mold growth.Because Boveda technology is used in a multitude of industries and cigar manufacturer packaging, we can test in our laboratory how to achieve the proper moisture content for any given item. We know it takes 14 days of exposure to 84% relative humidity to slowly and completely moisturize a wooden humidor. Any other seasoning method is dangerous and you'll get mixed results at best.
Like all Boveda products, our seasoning packs are easy to use and take the guesswork out of seasoning your new humidor or re-seasoning your humidor in the winter. Boveda seasoning packets provide a complete and even equilibration of moisture without causing mold or warping which can happen when following more antiquated seasoning methods.
Nothing could be easier. Simply place the correct amount of Boveda seasoning packs inside your humidor (without cigars) and wait 14 days. Then replace the seasoning Boveda (84% RH) with regular Boveda 62%-75% RH. Use one packet for every 25 cigars your humidor can hold. For example a 100 count humidor would require four packs.Don't worry about what your hygrometer is reading while you season. The moisture of the air is not the moisture content of the wood. What do you do with your cigars while your humidor is seasoning? We recommend placing them in a tupperware container, cooler, or Humidor Bag with 69% Boveda while you wait for your humidor to season.
*Do not mix different Boveda RH levels within the same container, and do not use Boveda in the same container with other humidification products. They will fight against each other and reduce the efficiency of the Boveda. One might expect that if you use a high RH Boveda in the same container as a lower RH Boveda that you'll achieve an environment somewhere in the middle. That is not the case, instead the moisture just transfers back and forth between the Bovedas.
That's why we make Boveda in five different RH levels for tobacco application: 65, 69, 72, 75 and 84 percent - so you can use the RH that achieves the humidity you and your cigars prefer.
Unlike distilled water and PG solutions with sponges/gel/crystals/beads that will impart unwanted flavors on your cigars, Boveda's reverse-osmosis membrane only releases pure water vapor and Boveda will never damage anything through direct contact.
Once you smoke a cigar stored with Boveda, you'll finally enjoy it exactly as the master blender intended.
Note: Do not mix Boveda RH levels within the same humidor, and do not use Boveda in the same humidor with other humidification products. They will fight against each other and reduce the efficiency of the Boveda.
